JACK

Belle avoided me like the plague for the rest of the week. Beyond the usual roommate pleasantries, we existed in different bubbles. She started work on Monday, and for as long as I was able, I was going to avoid going into the office.

Telling my roommate that I was her boss and head of New Sound Publishing wasn’t exactly what I wanted to do after almost having sex with her—there were some serious issues with that, including the power imbalance that would surely be present between us—so, like an idiot, I kept it to myself.

She might not ever have to know, to be honest. If I did what I do best—avoiding my responsibilities—she wouldn’t have to see me there for the whole year, and then I would leave. Simple as that.

So when Isobel, in a gorgeous, ass-hugging, waist-slimming work dress, gave me a nod and a pursed-lip smile on Monday morning, my fears dissipated ever so slightly. We could still have sex potentially. We could at least alleviate some of the tension between us and go back to the easy bantering and teasing that existed the first few days we had started living together.

I sat on the couch and pulled one of my many books off the shelves. David Mitchell today? Hmm. Maybe Ruth Ozeki? That sounded good. I flipped through the pages and sat on the couch, prepared to start my newfound routine. Partying didn’t exist in my life anymore, unfortunately. Kyle and I had talked every now and then, but he was too busy getting high or drunk to chat for longer than a few minutes.

Was I really like that just a few weeks ago? It made my abdomen clench up to think that I looked so sloppy, so red-eyed, and out of it. When Charles Wright came up to me on the beach, he must’ve thought I was a disgrace to the Kingsley name.

Just like everyone else. Like my father and brother thought up until the moment they died.

I was a disgrace.

I read the first page of the book three times before I put it down. None of the words made sense to me, and I suddenly didn’t know what life I wanted anymore. I didn’t want to go back to the unappealing lifestyle I had led before, but I also didn’t want to live as a Kingsley. While the money pouring into my bank account was a nice perk of the famed name, it didn’t make me feel any better knowing it was coming because of my father.

My phone rang on the coffee table, and I picked it up without looking at the caller ID. Even if it was spam, it served as a temporary distraction.

“This is Jack,” I said. “Who’s calling?”

“Jack!” The bubbly voice pierced through my speaker, and I grimaced. “This is Sarah Parsons, from New Sound Publishing. How are you today?”

“Peachy.”

“That’s wonderful!” She waited as if expecting me to ask her the same, but when she realized I wasn’t going to, she continued.
